Bunker
by Bruce Mutard
THE BUNKER is the story of a friendship between Jason (14 going on 15) and Annie (15 going on 25), who have been best friends and neighbors since they were very young. But what was purely platonic and agreeable back then becomes strained by their entry into adolescence, especially for Jason, who cannot hide the awakening sexual desire that he feels for Annie.
Events take a stranger turn when Annie sneaks into his room late one night to reveal that she has been haunted by a ghost in her bedroom. This ghost disrupts her sleep, so she concocts a secret plan to sleep over in Jason's room every night in the bunk-bed. Jason is skeptical of this story, but not enough to knock back her plan. To have the object of his affection come over and bunk with him every night was his and every other teenage boy's dream.
But no sooner does this happen than the gulf between them becomes very apparent and their friendship starts to unravel. Jason tries desperately to hold it together, struggling to maintain his platonic affection and respect for her, but Annie's increasingly erratic and precocious behavior puts him and her family to the test. Jason later discovers that the ghost which drove Annie to bunk with him was, in fact, more real than he could have imagined and a dark secret is revealed.
