WW2: Rommel No. 1
by Ron Ledwell
Field Marshal Erwin Rommel led the Afrika Korps to within a hairs-breadth of victory in the North African campaigns of World War II. This despite a severe disadvantage in numbers and equipment against the British forces confronting him, a severely constricted supply pipeline across a Mediterranean Sea dominated by the British Navy and inadequate support from Adolf Hitler, whose primary preoccupation was the Eastern Front. This near-success agaiinst enormous odds marks Rommel as perhaps Germany's greatest World War II commander, as well as a chivalrous soldier who treated his enemies and prisoners fairly.
